Automate TradingView Strategies Without Keeping Your PC On

You cannot automate a TradingView strategy from a computer that sleeps, but you also do not have to babysit a laptop all week. The fix is moving MT5 to something that stays on without you: a hardened always on setup, a dedicated spare machine, a rented VPS, or a hosted MT5 service. Each option trades money against maintenance in a different way. This post walks through all four so you can pick deliberately.

Why Does Your Strategy Stop When Your Laptop Sleeps?

Quick recap of the pipeline. Your TradingView strategy fires an alert, PineConnector relays it, and the PineConnector EA inside MT5 places the trade with your broker. TradingView fires alerts from its own servers, so your browser can be closed. MT5 is the one link that lives on your hardware.

When your laptop sleeps, MT5 stops, and every alert that fires in that window is lost. The signal is not queued or retried later. The trade simply never happens, and neither does the exit that was supposed to protect the position you already have open.

If you have not set up the pipeline yet, start with our guide on how to automate your TradingView strategy on MT5. If you have, and missed trades are your problem, keep reading.

Can You Make Your Laptop Reliable Enough?

Sometimes, and it costs nothing, so it is worth doing first even as a stopgap:

  • Disable sleep entirely. In Windows power settings, set sleep to Never for both battery and plugged in, and set the lid close action to Do Nothing.
  • Tame Windows updates. Set active hours so restarts do not land during your trading sessions, and check for pending restarts before you walk away.
  • Prefer a wired connection. Ethernet drops far less often than Wi-Fi.
  • Keep the machine plugged in and cool. Thermal shutdowns and dead batteries end sessions just as effectively as sleep does.

The honest limit: this makes your laptop better, not reliable. One forced update, one power cut, or one family member closing the lid, and you are offline. If your strategy trades sessions you cannot supervise, treat this as a bridge to a proper setup, not the destination.

Should You Dedicate a Spare Computer?

A step up from the laptop is a machine whose only job is running MT5. An old desktop or a small mini PC works, as long as it runs Windows 10 or 11 and stays wired to your router.

The appeal is control and one time cost. No monthly fee, your hardware, your rules. The weaknesses are the same ones your laptop has, just less frequent: home power, home internet, and Windows updates are still single points of failure, and you are still the only person who can fix a crash. If your home infrastructure is solid and your strategy is forgiving, this can genuinely be enough.

When Is a Rented VPS the Right Move?

A VPS moves MT5 into a data center, which removes home power and home internet from the failure list. Typical cost is $15 to $30 per month, and the machine needs Windows Server 2019 or newer, or Windows 10 or 11, with DLL imports allowed.

We covered this option in depth, including when to skip it, in do you need a VPS for automated trading. The short version: a VPS solves uptime but not upkeep. Setting it up, updating it, and reviving MT5 when it crashes at 3am all remain your job, done remotely.

What About Hosted MT5 Services?

There is a fourth category: services that run the MT5 terminal for you, so there is no machine to set up or maintain at all. Before trusting one with live trading, three questions matter more than anything else:

  1. Who handles your broker credentials? You should be the only person who ever enters or sees your broker login. Anything else is a risk you do not need to take.
  2. Does it run what you need? Some hosted services only run specific software. If your setup depends on a particular EA, confirm it is supported before you pay.
  3. What is the real total price? Compare against the full cost of the alternative, which is the VPS fee plus your setup and maintenance time, not the VPS fee alone.

Managed hosting is the option that removes maintenance from the equation entirely, which is exactly what the laptop trader in pain is usually looking for. Evaluate it with the three questions above and it becomes a straightforward comparison.

How Do the Four Options Compare?

Option Monthly Cost Setup Effort Ongoing Maintenance Survives Home Outages
Hardened laptop $0 Low You, constantly No
Dedicated spare PC $0 after hardware Medium You, occasionally No
Rented VPS $15 to $30 High You, remotely Yes
Hosted MT5 service Varies by provider Low The provider Yes

Whichever you choose, PineConnector works the same way, because it does not care where MT5 runs. Plans are priced by connected trading accounts: Starter at $49 per month for 1 account, Advanced at $99 for 3, and Professional at $199 for 10.

FAQ

Do I need to keep TradingView open in my browser?
No. TradingView fires alerts from its own servers. Only the MT5 terminal with the PineConnector EA needs to stay running.

Will alerts that fire while MT5 is offline execute when it comes back?
No. Signals sent while the terminal is offline are missed, not queued. That is why continuous uptime matters.

Can I run MT5 on my phone instead?
The MT5 mobile app is for manual trading and monitoring. It does not run Expert Advisors, so it cannot execute your PineConnector alerts.

Is a Raspberry Pi or an old Mac an option?
The PineConnector EA needs MT5 on Windows, so the practical DIY routes are a Windows PC or a Windows VPS.

Does PineConnector cost extra depending on where MT5 runs?
No. The plan price is the same whether MT5 runs on your laptop, a spare PC, or a VPS. Pricing depends only on how many trading accounts you connect.

What is the cheapest way to test all this?
The $14 seven-day trial, which is credited toward your first subscription month if you continue. Harden your laptop for free, run the trial on a demo account, and you will find out quickly whether your setup drops signals.
